MOTHERHOOD, MATRESCENCE & IDENTITY

Woman stretching outdoors – matrescence and postpartum body connection

Motherhood Support at ICC

Looking for space to process identity shifts, grief, or reconnection?

Becoming a mother can change everything—emotionally, relationally, spiritually, and physically. It can shift how you see yourself, your body, your relationships, and even your place in the world. Whether you're navigating pregnancy, postpartum, or the long arc of parenting, this transition can bring a complex blend of grief, joy, overwhelm, and awakening.

At Intimate Connections Counseling, we offer specialized support for those wrestling with the identity shifts that come with motherhood. This is a space for you to reflect, grieve, question, and realign—free from judgment or expectation. Whether you're mourning your "before" self, feeling lost in the demands of caregiving, or craving deeper reconnection with your desires, you are not alone.

What is matrescence?

Matrescence is the profound psychological and social transformation that occurs in the transition to motherhood — a shift as significant as adolescence. At ICC, we honor the nuances of this experience and understand how deeply it can reshape identity, relationships, and self-understanding. Our work together is paced gently, focused on your specific story, and rooted in your values.

Topics we may explore in session include:

  • Navigating societal ideals vs. your lived motherhood experience

  • Changes in desire, body image, and postpartum intimacy

  • Identity shifts and reclaiming agency, voice, and needs

  • Grief, guilt, rage, ambivalence, and mixed emotions

  • Longing for reconnection with your before self

  • Wanting deeper presence and connection with your child or partner

Motherhood deserves to be witnessed in its full emotional and existential depth. You do not have to go through it invisibly.

This may be the right fit for you if you:

  • Feel like you've "lost yourself" since becoming a parent

  • Struggle to articulate your needs, desires, or identity outside of caregiving

  • Are navigating major life transitions (e.g., new baby, work changes, relationship shifts)

  • Crave a safe space to speak honestly about taboo or conflicting feelings

We provide this support via secure telehealth for residents of Utah and Idaho. All sessions are online and tailored to your lived experience. To learn more or request a first session, click here.
